A recent study from the Small Business Administration
(SBA) Office of Advocacy confirmed what many of us in the business
consulting industry have know for years. Small business owners in
the United States
are the backbone of our economy. The SBA study concluded that
small businesses create a majority of new jobs
and generate over half of the U.S. economic output. The following
statistics are taken from the study*:

- Small business make up 99.7% of all
United States employers.
- Small businesses create more than 50% of
the American non-farm private gross domestic product (GDP)
- The more than 24 million small businesses
in the United States are located in every community and neighborhood.
- Small businesses employ 50.1% of the
United States’ non-farm private sector workers.
- Home-based businesses account for 53% of
all small businesses.
- United States saw an estimated 580,000
new small firms with employees start-up in the last year measured.
- There are approximately 4.1 million
minority-owned businesses and 6.4 million women-owned businesses in the
United States, and almost all of them are small businesses.
- The latest figures show that small business creates 65%
or more of America’s net new jobs.
